Life After Death - what it implies
by Lilian Litton – a devoted Spiritualist who has now gone home to the Realms.

There are many aspects and many implications of this wonderful truth but firstly, I am going to consider just what happens after the last breath has left the physical body.

Many of you will be aware that each of us has within us a duplicate, an etheric counterpart of your physical body, made of ether and that this counterpart is animated and directed by its indwelling spirit. This spirit contains the mind and the emotions – a unity of spirit, mind and emotions and body.

When the time arrives that the incarnate spirit has finished its sojourn in the physical body and the body can no longer house it, perhaps because the atoms of the body have disintegrated and ill-health and disease may have set in, then will the silver cord be severed. The silver cord is the life-line between the spirit and the body, being actually mentioned in Ecclesiastics, ‘ere ever the silver cord be loosened.’ This life-line is made up of several strands which pulsate and vibrate, registering the pulse rate, the heart beats and the blood circulation. (When a spirit has projected from the body in sleep state, one with the clairvoyant vision might be able to observe this silver cord pulsating in rhythm to the beat of the heart.)

As death commences to take place, slowly the etheric counterpart will begin to rise from the heart centre and up to the centre at the top of the head in vaporous form and slowly begin to form a counterpart of the physical body. It will be noticed that this counterpart form is still connected to the physical body by this cord but, gradually, as the spirit form becomes denser and denser and moves away or is carried away by the welcoming spirit friends, then the cord will become thinner and thinner until it will snap. Only at this moment can it be truly said that the person is ‘dead.’ In the event of an accident this process is speeded up and the cord is snapped very quickly, which can cause a certain amount of shock to the spirit.

What happens now? The spirit who has left the body in a natural manner is escorted to the various halls of reception by those who have come to meet the spirit – the loved ones, the helpers, all of whom knew beforehand that the spirit was about to make the transition. Eventually, after a time of re-adjustment, the spirit will find that it will be attracted to the sphere which it has earned the right to dwell therein. Each soul can only go to its own place. It cannot go to a higher sphere, although no one will attempt to stop him or her, for unless the spirit is ready for it, unless it can face or bear the brilliance, the radiance of the light from the higher spheres, then it will feel such discomfort that it will have to return to its own lower sphere.

So it is that automatically each one gravitates to the place they have earned for themselves whilst on earth, whether it is high or low, or an intermediate state. But no one need remain static, the opportunity for progression is available to everyone, for evolution is the keynote of spirit life.

Therefore the inference seems that if we KNOW we shall each one go to the place we have earned, then surely if we are wise we will endeavour to so order our lives that our lives may be filled with harmony, refining the grossness of the animal nature and in simple terms, do our best while on earth so that there will not be a long period of adjustment, or cleansing, when we pass over.

The destination to which we go has nothing whatever to do with the type of religion we may have followed when on earth, nor is it dependent on any so-called ‘salvation’ that we may have tried to achieve. Whether we acknowledge the fact that there is a God, or Allah, whether we are Christian or Jew or Muslim, an atheist, agnostic or humanist, whatever we do or do not believe, we may be certain that each human being WILL survive death and will go to the place for which he has fitted himself whilst on earth.

Now what are the benefits of this knowledge – this knowledge that each one has an indwelling spirit and that he is here for a short time on this earth, to fit himself for the next stage – existence in the spirit realms? There are many benefits but I will briefly say that the most important one is that, because of the knowledge that we are going to survive, the fear of death – the fear of the unknown – is lessened or banished forever. It is a strange thing that in society today every question under the sun will be discussed and aired, a man’s innermost heart may be laid bare on television or radio, but when the question of God, or of dying, arises there is a clamping down and people are embarrassed, changing the subject quickly; perhaps you may have noticed this amongst your friends and neighbours. Mention life after death and they will slide away from the subject, or will say: ‘let’s get on with this life and don’t worry about the next.’ This last attitude may have a little in its favour but knowledge is given for us to us and to benefit from.

If we know where we are going, then surely life has a purpose and a meaning. It no longer becomes a scramble to get as many goods of the world s we can, nor is there the anxiety to mollycoddle our physical bodies to ensure that we may live as long as possible. If one does not know what is going to happen after death, if it is thought that there is only extinction, nothingness, at the end of earth’s brief span, then the feeling may be: ‘let us get the most out of life that we can, let us eat, drink and be merry’, etc. this is the attitude of ignorance and materialism that is responsible for social ills, for the loneliness that can strike at the hearts of people, a feeling of isolation and panic because they do not know what is beyond this life, especially after the departure of dear ones into the so-called ‘unknown’ when they may feel the canker of a cold emptiness.

As a contrast, ours is the gospel of hope and of joy, which promises that life need not be futile and empty, that life is continuous and indestructible and that death means only a temporary parting leading to a joyous reunion in a new life.

I would explain the source of this ‘gospel’, this teaching. It comes from the same source that tells us we are spirit, untouched by death and surviving eternally. Through the channels of mediumship, of seership, comes the revelations and
